What Science Is Now Telling Us
The evidence is mounting. A recent study published in May 2026 found that microplastics are accumulating in human brains. Multiple studies have detected plastic particles in placentas, breast milk, infant formula, and the first stool of newborns. The detection rate of microplastics in placental samples has increased dramatically—from 60% in 2006, to 90% in 2013, to 100% of samples in 2021.
One study found that babies born today may be contaminated with higher levels of plastics than babies born two decades ago. This is deeply concerning for parents, particularly as infants and young children are most vulnerable to chemical exposures due to their smaller body size and developing systems.
How Plastics Affect Children's Health
The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued warnings about food additives and chemicals found in plastics, noting that children may be particularly susceptible due to their higher exposure relative to body size.

Phthalates – These chemicals make plastic flexible and are used in industrial food production. Concerns include effects on male genital development, increased risk of childhood obesity, and potential cardiovascular effects.
Studies have linked urinary BPA and phthalate levels to childhood obesity. Environmental exposures are increasingly recognised as important contributors to paediatric obesity alongside diet and physical activity.
The Scale of the Problem

When plastic bottles are exposed to heat or sunlight, the problem worsens. A study from Purdue University found that sunlight exposure caused PET bottles to release millions of microparticles into the water. If you leave your child's plastic bottle in a warm car or direct sunlight, the risk multiplies.
Beyond health, plastic bottles are a major environmental disaster. The annual global consumption of plastic bottles is set to top half a trillion, with more than 480 billion sold in 2016—less than 50% were collected for recycling, and only 7% were turned into new bottles. 5 to 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into our oceans each year.
The production of bottled water also uses 2000 times more energy than tap water. It takes 7 litres of water to produce just 1 litre of bottled water.

Biofilm is a slimy, slick residue that forms inside water bottles, harbouring harmful bacteria that can leach into water. Studies have shown that plastic water bottles are likely to develop biofilm more quickly than stainless steel or glass alternatives.
